International Dance Competition 101

  1. All dancers and participating groups must be University of Tennessee students, faculty, staff, or alumni.
  2. Groups must have at least one member from the country/culture represented by the dance performance. If the group does not have any members from the country/culture represented by the dance, groups must consult with someone from the country/culture they are representing.
  3. Performers will be required to wear masks at all times. Performers are strongly encouraged to wear face coverings during their performance.
  4. Dance performances must be five minutes or less.
  5. Due to space limitation on the Student Union Auditorium stage, we cannot accommodate any group that has more than 15 members.
  6. Due to COVID-19 capacity restrictions, we will not have access to use the Auditorium backstage dressing rooms. A ‘backstage’ space will be available just outside the student union auditorium in the student union courtyard or in Union Station. Performers are welcome to join the audience in the auditorium after they perform. Performers are encouraged to arrive in their costumes since we will not have a readily available changing area.
  7. Groups will be required to attend a mandatory dress rehearsal the week prior to the International Dance Competition on March 29. If groups cannot attend this rehearsal, they will be required to arrange their own reservation of the I-House Great Room to rehearse their performance.
  8. Groups will be required to submit their music as an MP3 downloadable file to an I-House staff member along with a description of their dance performance and the song title no later than March 23rd, 11:59pm
  9. Three guest judges will score each performance to determine the winners of the International Dance Competition. Groups will be judged on the following criteria: choreography and execution, passion/interaction with the audience, cultural expression, and costumes/visual. The winning performer(s) will be honored on a plaque in the International House.
  10. Groups will be required to agree to release any and all photos taken during rehearsal and/or International Dance Competition for future publicity use by the International House.
  11. The International Dance Competition will be live-streamed for people to view virtually from any location on April 7th at 6:00pm at
